Spontaneous haemopneumothorax.
A 32-year-old woman underwent surgical excision of a lump in her left breast in a general surgical unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Clinical diagnosis of fibroadenosis was confirmed by frozen section histology. Anaesthesia was uneventful, the patient breathing spontaneously throughout the operation via a face mask. She was well post-operatively and was discharged on the evening of the surgery.

We describe two cases of spontaneous haemopneumothorax treated successfully at emergency thoracotomy. We emphasize the importance of torn apical vascular adhesions as a source of intrathoracic haemorrhage in these two cases.
